How to get your Facebook Username for your pages

If you have a facebook page and you've managed to become popular enough to have more than 25 fans (now likes) then you've already probably tried creating a username for your facebook page.

For the sake of those who may not know what a facebook username does, it simply allows you to take your default facebook url like
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rainstorm-Design-Studios/140005242703936
and turn it into
http://www.facebook.com/rainstormdesignstudios.
This comes in really handy when you want to tell one of your friends to check your business on facebook or to print your facebook link on a call card.

A process that seems very simple has managed to elude many facebook page administrators and has even caused some to accidentally make their facebook page a personal profile account. Read on as I show you how to create a facebook username for your page.

Creating your username

The weird thing about this process is that you cannot create a facebook username for your page with your facebook page account. Unfortunately, some have taken this to mean that they need to convert their facebook page to a personal profile account in order to get the username. DON'T DO THAT! If you go to facebook.com/username using the account that you created your facebook page with i.e. one that is not a personal profile account you would be greeted with the following:

If you convert your account here then your page would now be a personal profile page which is not what you would want for your business.

Steps to take:

  1. Log in to your facebook page as the administrator
  2. Set your personal profile account as an administrator for the facebook page you are currently on (you have to be a fan of your page from a personal profile account to do this)
  3. Log out of your facebook page
  4. Log in to facebook with your personal profile account username and password
  5. Navigate to http://www.facebook.com/username. You would see the options as shown below:
  6. Click on the Page Name dropdown box and select the page you are now administrator of
  7. Type in a username for that page (be very careful as you cannot undo this)
  8. Check the availability of the username and confirm the change
  9. You have just added a username to your page.
