How often should I update my Facebook Fan page?

One of the most common social media  questions I get when it comes to Facebook is how often should I post to my Facebook fan page? My response is “it depends on your fans” (the make up of Facebook users following you on your Facebook fan page) as well as the subject of your fan page.

If you have a fan page for your business or organization, I usually recommend 2 to 3 times a week to start. (Especially if you are a busy business. After all, you can’t forget your weekly marketing!). Consider posting items of interest to your readers such as useful tips, your latest video or blog post, or even a link to an online news article related to your industry with your comments. Of course, if any of your basic business information changes (e.g. address or phone number), you’ll want to update that as soon as possible.

As you gather more fans and get more of them to interact with your fan page postings (or if you’re lucky enough to be a celebrity) your Facebook paparazzi are probably hungry to hear from you more often on what’s happening with your business, events, travel tours, tips, books you’ve written, etc. At this point, you can probably start taking things up to 2-3 postings per day.

You can figure out how well your frequency of posting works by simply monitoring both your engagements (i.e. fans liking your fan page postings or commenting on them) and by viewing your fan page Insights. If you begin to post more frequently and start noticing a significant rise in people who “unsubscribe” from your fan page, this may be a sign to tone down the number of postings a bit.

Remember that out of sight truly is out of mind, and in this busy world our businesses are often the last things on peoples’ minds. By posting on a regular basis to your Facebook fan page and measuring your results, you’ll not only keep your readers up to date with what’s happening but you’ll also help them crave more tidbits about you as well as keep you in mind the next time they or someone else they know may need your service or offering.
